Shout out to the autistic people who used to be called “gifted” and “prodigies“ when they were younger kids, only to then get screwed over by the school system and left feeling like faliures.
Despite what those feelings might try to tell you, you are not a faliure.
The school system failed you. You did not fail it.
If you’re autistic and don’t fit into either high or low stereotypes, the responses are vicious. Certain parents will claim you’re offensive to their “struggling child” or even tell you your accomplishments mean nothing. If you score high on a real, in person IQ tests, you’ll be told to be quiet about it. To protect the feelings of “normal” children. You could have gone into honors classes, but putting special needs students in there would cause major complaints. Your Chem teacher feels you should be in physics classes, only to be told no despite his PhD. Imagine working hard and getting tired, burnt out, even your allistic friend feels you have every right to be tired. Your usually loving parent who was so proud of you becomes icy cold and everything that was done means much less now. She doesn’t get why the kindness she does have for you is responded with stocism.
Remember, it’s up to you. Realize that you cannot expect to make anyone proud. Do the right thing. You can and will. It is not easy, but you must not allow your talents to go to waste simply to keep others comfortable. But it is okay to feel hurt. It will be hard.
